When choosing a magnifier, the first step is to find the magnification that suits your needs. Most optical magnifiers offer magnification between 2x and 5x, sometimes up to 10x. Magnification refers to the enlargement ratio of the magnifier. For example: if the letters of a text to enlarge are 3 mm high, a 2x magnifier will make them appear 6 mm high, while a 3x magnifier will make them appear 9 mm high, and so on. In practice, for a versatile reading magnifier, the most commonly used magnification is 2x or 3x. It should be noted that the higher the magnification, the smaller the diameter of the magnifier.

An illuminated magnifier is useful for increasing user comfort. The lighting improves visibility and contrast. With the same magnification, an illuminated magnifier is more efficient than a standard magnifier.

Dome magnifiers, Fresnel lenses (A4 magnifying sheets) and magnifying rulers are practical reading aids for books and newspapers, but also for sewing when reading patterns or following lines.
