Pupillary Distance (PD) Measurement Guide

Pupillary distances are necessary for the manufacture of prescription glasses; they correspond to the distance between the centre of each of your pupils. These measurements are used by our opticians to centre the corrective lenses by positioning the optical centres of the lenses in front of the centre of your pupils.

To validate your order with corrective lenses, you will need to indicate the values of your right and left half pupillary distances in the prescription information form. These values are given in mm in the drop-down menu, with a choice ranging between 25 and 44.

Diagram example: pupillary distance = 64mm; right half-distance = 34mm; left half-distance = 30mm.

In the drop-down menu on the form, you would therefore select 34 for the right eye and 30 for the left eye.

How to obtain your pupillary distance measurements:

  • Visit our store

If you live in France, we recommend visiting our store. An optician will take the measurements of your pupillary distances.

  • Already a VISIONALIS customer

If you have already had eyewear made at our store or on our website, we already have your measurements on file. Simply indicate this in the "already a Visionalis customer" field.

  • Ask your ophthalmologist

During your consultation, simply ask your ophthalmologist to measure your right and left half-distances and to note these values on your prescription.

  • Check a prescription or invoice from your previous glasses

The value of your pupillary distance is often written on one of your prescriptions or eyewear invoices. Generally, the total pupillary distance is a value between 55 and 70 mm. It can be divided into two values close to 30 mm to obtain your half pupillary distances.

These measurements may be indicated in different ways, as shown below in the examples:

Total pupillary distance:

In the case of the total distance, you will need to calculate the half-distances: divide the measurement by 2, for example 69/2 = 34.5 mm for each eye.

Half pupillary distances:

The letters OD and OG or PD and PG correspond to the right eye and the left eye. Values are given in mm.

  • Send a photograph to our opticians (measurement kit)*

Our opticians can measure your pupillary distances from a photograph; this option will be offered to you as part of a personalised consultation.

If you choose this option, we will send you a kit by post including a specific ruler and the procedure to follow for taking the photo.
